It's safe to say that Kim Kardashian is one of the most celebrated celebrities in the history of reality television and pop culture. Her name and her face completely dominate our television screens, tabloid covers and page-six stories. Everything is on the table when it comes to Kim K. especially with her addictive reality television show on the E-network 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians'. Every move she makes is highly publicized and highly criticized. Everything, from her amateur sex-tape with r&b singer Ray-J, to her 72-day long marriage to NBA star Kris Humphreys and recently the birth of daughter North West with hip-hop genius Kanye West.
Kim's lifestyle and career were built on her image and depends on attention from the media and her fans. This brings us to the question of the day. Why is anyone surprised or upset at the selfie she and Kanye posted via Instagram and Twitter. The new mother was dawning a white backless one-piece bathing suit? Fans took to Instagram to express how hot the new mom looked after giving birth less than 4 months ago and losing over 40 pounds. While Kim and Kanye were excited, an shocking amount of Instagram and Twitter followers got straight to the point calling Kim “disgusting”, “desperate”, “pathetic” and a “prostitute”. Other followers commented saying “her obsession with her image will be her downfall” and “you're a mother not a prostitute.”
Has anyone stopped to think that maybe we're being too hard on Kim? This is what she does, she's built her brand using her curves and her looks. If this were on the cover of a Sports Illustrated issue how quick would people be to call her out. What about if she had done a spread for GQ magazine? Beyonce rocked a GQ magazine shoot flaunting her post baby bod in several pairs of laced underwear and we were all excited. So why does Kim K get the flak.
What are we really upset about? Does it matter that Kim took her own photograph and Beyonce had a team of photographers, or does it matter that Kim is a reality star and Beyonce is a Grammy-award winning entertainer? Either way they're both new mothers, who both flaunted their post-baby bods yet they got completely opposite reactions.
I think most of us didn't really mind the photograph, I just think we've probably seen too much of Kim, in general, and we're probably a little worn out with her attention grabbing antics.
